National Indigenous Peoples Day

National Indigenous People’s Day is a chance to educate and reflect on the lives and status of Indigenous Peoples in Canada. On June 21 Remai Modern will be filled with drumming, singing, educational activities, live music and more. Start the day off in a good way with us in the Atrium at 10 AM for a pipe ceremony and opening prayer. Participation is encouraged in all we do, so please join us at 11 AM on the south deck to take part in the honour song.

A basic explanation of drum teachings will be conducted by Wally Awasis and Anthony Pasqua. Live music starts at 1 PM in the Riverview Room and continues until 2:30 PM. Come and support your favourite hip hop artists as they cypher live onstage. At 3 PM, venture over to the Sasktel Theatre (located in Remai Modern) to watch the unveiling of Big Tones’ new music video Open Ya Eyez. This song has been accepted onto CBC’s Reclaimed radio show and will play across the country.

Tobacco is one of the four sacred medicines that is often used by many Plains and Indigenous peoples for ceremony and exchange for knowledge. Indigenous Program Guide Cree Longjohn offers teachings from a Plains Cree Sturgeon Lake First Nation member about tobacco protocol. Join us in the Cameco Learning Studio from 11 AM-2 PM to create your own pouch from felt and cord and learn why to offer tobacco and how to offer tobacco in a respectful way. Tobacco will not be provided, but is left up to the visitor to pursue when the time is right.

Join us at 7 PM in Remai Modern’s SaskTel Theatre for a free film screening of Ever Deadly by Tanya Tagaq & Chelsea McMullan.

June 21 is about unity; Reconciliation Saskatoon, Pride and the Saskatoon Indian & Metis Friendship Centre will be hosting an array of events throughout the day as well. We encourage you to take part in the events happening in Victoria Park and at Remai Modern!
