Thank you for supporting galaMODERN

Held on November 2, 2023, galaMODERN was an unforgettable evening of food, drink and unique art experiences found throughout the museum. Proceeds from this year’s galaMODERN went towards our School Tours program. We are thrilled to share that with your support, we have once again achieved our fundraising target. Your generous contributions will breathe life into our school tours program for another year, ensuring that the youth of Saskatoon continue to enjoy enriching art experiences that foster creativity and inspiration.

Celebrating Saskatchewan artists

galaMODERN expands what it means to be an institution rooted in place. The evening explores art from the Great Plains and highlights the inspiring local artists who make an impact across Canada and beyond.

The honoured artist at galaMODERN in 2023 was Ruth Cuthand.

Ruth Cuthand (b. 1954, Prince Albert) is a Saskatoon-based artist of Plains Cree, Scottish and Irish ancestry. Over the last 40 years, Cuthand has challenged the status quo by “exposing the inequities that have plagued for centuries Canada’s relationship with its First Peoples, while proudly claiming a complex and self-determined Aboriginal identity.” Cuthand’s practice has included printmaking, painting, drawing, photography, and beadwork. Her work is held in public collections including Remai Modern; the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto; Art Bank, Canada Council for the Arts, Ottawa; MacKenzie Art Gallery, Regina; University of Saskatchewan and many more. She has shown extensively across North America in both solo and group exhibitions. Cuthand received the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts in 2020 and the Lieutenant Governor’s Arts Awards, Saskatchewan Artist in 2013.

galaMODERN is not only an evening of sensory delights but an important fundraiser for Remai Modern’s art education programs, namely our School Tours program. In fact, every year 25% of Saskatoon children spend at least one day of the school year at Remai Modern participating in a School Tour.

As Saskatoon grows and the cost of living increases, the demand for our free, accessible, and inclusive art education initiatives grows.

We are eager to meet our community’s need and once again, we are dedicating the fundraising efforts of galaMODERN to expand the reach and impact of the School Tours program.
