Kiyari McNab: Dancing Alone – Chokecherry Youth Response
In response to Jeffrey Gibson’s She Never Dance’s Alone (2019)
Artist Bio: Kiyari McNab is a Cree-Ojibwe woman based in Saskatoon, SK on Treaty 6 Territory. She is an interdisciplinary artist that uses storytelling to critically explore nuances of oppression and freedom. Kiyari’s short documentary film, Abnormal Freedom (2018) has been screened at several international film festivals including Hot Docs and Seattle International Film Festival. She is a co-founder of Chokecherry Studios and currently works there as a program coordinator.
About the project: Chokecherry Youth Response is a partnership project between Chokecherry Studios, Remai Modern and PAVED Arts. The project asked for submissions from youth-artist participants inspired by a single work in the exhibition, An apology, a pill, a ritual, a resistance. Ten emerging artists took on the challenge and got to work creating new pieces that respond to the exhibition’s multifaceted exploration of health and healing.
