KSAMB Improvisation Scores

As part of the Sustained Artist Mentorship Program, artist duo KSAMB presents a series of improvisation scores in the museum. On alternating Saturday afternoons between 1-4 PM, KSAMB will explore movement in the museum.

KSAMB uses Contact Improvisation—a postmodern dance practice where movement is shaped by physical touch between the dancers — as well as scored movement. During this project, dancers Kyle Syverson and Miki Mappin will engage with the expressive potentials and political implications of the body and the way they conform or resist social and economic forces.

The series kicks off on Saturday, October 18 with their performance, Taking a Stand. This work draws on a practice now integral to Contact Improvisation, known as, The Stand, or The Small Dance. Developed by the founder of Contact Improvisation Steve Paxton, it formed part of his 1972 performance Magnesium andis a meditation on the reflexive movements that occur to keep us upright. The performance-experiment of The Stand questions what improvisation is and considers “taking a stand” as a political act.
